After years of procrastination and fighting perfection, I am taking a step of obedience to what I feel like the Lord has asked me to do… to start. Starting a creative business and blogging has been on my heart since 2008. For years, I struggled to figure out what my niche would be. I have creative passion of all sorts of things, and because of that, I had a hard time seeing one thing through completion and starting my business. Oh, and there was also fear and the feeling of being completely ill-equipped. Can you relate?
For the past 10 years, I have been a graphic designer within the advertising industry, first in print and then now within the digital platform. I have also freelanced on the side. I always knew I wanted to do more with the artistic skills the Lord has blessed me with and, I need less-screen time and a more flexible schedule for my family. I love typography, pattern, illustration, painting, photography, crafting, home decor – the list goes on. I want to be able to use my skills to bless others, beyond what the confines of corporate advertising can allow.
When Ben and I began dating in 2009, I felt strongly that the Lord told me He had something he wanted us to accomplish together that we could not do as individuals. We got married in 2010, and immediately, Ben made investments to help support my work as a creative. We would dream together of having a business someday. It wasn’t until we bought our first home that we discovered what the Lord had in mind with that early vision. In 2012, a door was opened and we quickly built a new, builder-grade home. Plans and dreams for our business grew, as we began to lay the foundation of our vision in that home. Ben begin to take on small projects and realized he had a passion for woodworking and building, and he is so talented at it. I enjoyed every aspect of making our house a home and tackled making curtains, seat cushions, and cornice boards. When we started making nursery plans to welcome our first baby, I painted scripture on the walls and the Lord revealed to me another gift I could use in our business. Friends and family saw what I did, and begin to ask for custom signs and art they could hang in their own homes. So together, in this season, Ben and I are creating hand-made wood signs and custom-built furniture.
Most recently, the Lord called us to sell our 3-year old, spacious home and downsize to a home that needed lots of love. We knew based upon what we wanted the next 10 years to look like, that this was the right decision for our family.
