I realize we are 11 months into the year and 2016 is coming to a close. But I wanted to share the fruit of the word of the year I chose for 2016 as I start to put feelers out for my word for 2017. For the past few years I have done this, chosen a word of the year. This concept helps me look back upon a year and ahead to the new year with purpose and intention. The word helps as a foundation to build upon and also reveals more clearly to me ways the Lord is working in my life. Past years’ words have included Blessing 2013, Change 2014, and Start 2015.
My word for 2016: Rooted
In late 2015, the Lord just continued to press this word “rooted” on my heart. I began by digging a little deeper into scripture to find instances of the word, and what this might look like to live it out. I want to be able to tie my word to a specific scripture so that I now I am laying a foundation for the year that is based upon Truth. Once I find the scripture that speaks to my heart and contains that word, I reference that same scripture in various translations of the Bible. My base scripture is from Colossians 2:7…
- Rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. – NKJV
- My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you’ve been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. You’re deeply rooted in him. You’re well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. – MSG
- Have your roots planted deep in Christ. Grow in Him. Get your strength from Him. Let Him make you strong in the faith as you have been taught. Your life should be full of thanks to Him. – NLV
- Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. – NLT
Next, I will actually look up the true definition of the word in the dictionary. Rooted meaning firmly planted. The word root meaning the part that grows deep into the soil, and anchors the plant, providing it with nutrients; the essential part; to implant or establish deeply.
I now have open eyes to see this word everywhere. When I scroll through Instagram and see a post that contains it, I take a screenshot. When I am reading a book or a magazine, the words — rooted, roots, planting, or sewing seed — pop off the page. I lean in closer to what is being said and take note. I compile all these screenshots and notes in Evernote on my phone, so that I am able to reference them often.
Because this is my word of the year, and I am finally launching my business and website, I felt strongly that this same idea would lay the foundation of Yellow Daisy Creative. And it’s just like God to provide this word for a my business with a flower in its name. I couldn’t have come up with that on my own.
